Womaen’s Caucus of the Church of the Brethren

Consciousness-Raising Groups

At the 2007 Annual Conference, we are launching our brand-spanking new pilot curriculum for discussion groups. We hope to provide resources and an international network of contemporary consciousness-raising groups, each of which is co-creating the feminist movement of today. Our luncheon and booth will feature segments from our movies. Hooray!

Below, you will find the letter to group leaders and links to units from the pilot curriculum. Please use them, adapt them to your groups’ needs, and let us know how they work out for you!

Dear Group Leaders;

Welcome to the Church of the Brethren Womaen’s Caucus new curriculum for feminist consciousness-raising groups. This Feminist Consciousness-Raising Group Curriculum Project hopes to serve as a network for groups, providing resources to help each other co-create the continuing feminist movement in our church.

In the first section of this curriculum, we explore some possible guidelines for discussion groups. We encourage you to use the suggestions there as inspiration, a jumping-off point, and to add your group’s unique discussion guidelines, according to the needs and interests of your group. The other units explore some issues facing feminists in the church. The videos are available on DVD by mail and also online: www.womaenscaucus.org and www.youtube.com/Womaen Because of copyright concerns with the website host, we cannot distribute the article by Sister Teresa Okure, but you can print it for your group by directly accessing it online. (Permission for use was granted by the author.) The final units provide discussion questions for recent issues of the Caucus newsletter, Femailings. Womaen’s Caucus supporters can receive Femailings for free by mail, or accessed online at the Caucus website, www.womaenscaucus.org.

In this curriculum, we offer several lists of questions. They are far from exhaustive. The general task we suggest for you as group leader is to facilitate a space where feminists can ask their own questions, and can make their stories become the primary text of discussion.

Since this is an emerging project, we welcome your suggestions, your stories of using the discussion units, and your contributions for future editions. We invite you to create and submit your own videos, articles, questions, or other material, to serve as a curriculum for groups around the country and world. Please contact us for more copies of this curriculum, for more information, or to submit your own discussion group curriculum.

Happy discussing!

Sincerely,
Audrey deCoursey
